Founded in 1932 by Dr Alfons Knauf and Karl Knauf in Germany, Knauf was originally a producer of conventional gypsum. Today the Knauf Group has grown into a multinational producer of building materials and construction systems.
      The Knauf Group produces construction materials for drywall construction, plasterboard, mineral fibre acoustic board, dry mortar with gypsum for internal plaster and cement-based external plaster and insulating materials on the basis of glass wool and mineral wool.
      From the 1960s, Knauf went international and has been expanding from a gypsum board manufacturer to an international building materials and construction solution provider. The Group now produces and sells its products in all European countries. Furthermore, there are factories located in North and South America, the CIS states, Turkey, China and Indonesia.
      As one of the world's leading manufacturers of building materials, Knauf operates more than 150 production sites worldwide. It has a workforce of 22,000 in 40 countries, and in 2007 the company sales amounted to 5.5 billion Euros.
      Knauf is also a leading producer of insulation material based on glass wool or stone wool. Production facilities are located in Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia, USA and Hungary. The Group also has a joint venture with USG manufacturing cement boards.

Development in Mainland China
"Building the Future", one of Knauf's position statements across the globe is certainly proving true in China.
      In 1992, Knauf introduced its advanced production technology to China. In the mid-Nineties of the past century, first steps were taken that led to the construction of the first of three factories.
      The China market, with current construction works and potential growth, will continue to be one of the main areas of investment for the Knauf Group. To cope with the increasing demand, the Group has established a very strong technical team in the region.
      Following the establishment of plasterboard factories in Wuhu and Tianjin, Knauf Plasterboard (Dongguan) Co Ltd was also established in 2001. It is the only plasterboard manufacturer locating in the region and supplies the building industry in Hong Kong, Macau and Southern China. It also exports to Taiwan.
      A new plasterboard manufacturing plant in Taicang is currently being planned with a capacity of 30 million sq m per year. This state-of-the-art facility is capable of being expanded to produce more than 100 million sq m of safe, environmentally friendly and energy efficient plasterboard systems each year. This new extension further moves the Group into the position of the biggest foreign invested manufacturer of plasterboard in China. Currently, the Knauf Group in East Asia operates 4 state-of-the-art plasterboard plants and 1 XPS Insulation plant in China.
