Airport midfield project construction commenced
The Airport Authority held a groundbreaking ceremony on December 9 for its Midfield development. Phase one of the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015. The Midfield area is the last piece of land on the airside available for large-scale development. It is located to the west of Terminal One and between the two runways. Phase one includes the construction of a five-level Midfield Concourse with a total floor area of 78,000 square metres and more than 35 environmentally-friendly features. There will be 20 aircraft parking stands, an Automated People Mover link extending from Terminal one, a cross-field taxiway, and other support facilities. The works will cost $9 billion and create 2,000 jobs during construction. When completed, the airport will have an additional handling capacity of 10 million passengers a year. Secretary for Transport & Housing Eva Cheng said: "This is an important addition to the infrastructure inventory of Hong Kong International Airport. The project will be developed in phases to increase the airport's handling capacity to 70 million passengers and 6 million tonnes of cargo, which is expected to cope with air traffic demand by 2020."
Phase 1 of the project will include a new midfield concourse with 11 bridge-served stands and 9 operational stands
