Tung Chung to provide 31 hectares for high-density housing developments
The Chief Executive in Council has approved the draft Tung Chung Town Centre Area outline zoning plan.
     The foothills on the southern fringe of the area, covering 47.1 hectares, have been zoned "green belt" to preserve the topography and natural vegetation and to provide recreational outlets.
     The planning scheme area covers 253 hectares. It is located on the north shore of Lantau Island, southeast of Hong Kong International Airport.
     A site near Tung Chung MTR station and another site adjacent to the proposed pier at the waterfront are zoned commercial. These two sites, covering about 2.1 hectares, will provide land for offices, shops and services, places of entertainment, eating places and other commercial developments.
     About 23 hectares is zoned comprehensive development area for residential and commercial use with the provision of open space and other support facilities.
     The residential (Group A) zone covers 31 hectares for high-density housing developments. The village type development zone will be 5.4 hectares.
     About 22.3 hectares is zoned government, institution or community to serve the local residents.
     About 55.7 hectares has been zoned open space to provide outdoor open-air public space for recreational use.
