Planning Department's Population Distribution Projections 2015-2024 report published recently predicts the total population share of the New Territories will rise from 52% in 2014 to 55% by 2024, while Kowloon will remain at 30% and Hong Kong Island will fall from 17% to 15%.
     The department said the population of the New Territories will increase by 456,600 to 4.24 million and Kowloon will increase by 132,400 to 2.33 million during the same period, but Hong Kong Island will decrease from 1.27 million to 1.19 million.
     It said Sha Tin, Kwun Tong and Yuen Long will be the largest districts in 2024, with populations reaching 721,100, 686,800 and 685,200. Eastern District will have the highest proportion of people aged 65 or above, rising from 18% in 2014 to 28% in 2024.
