Sewage cavern plan broached
The Drainage Services Department is conducting a feasibility study on relocating Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to caverns in Nui Po Shan in A Kung Kok.
The department's Chief Engineer (Sewerage Projects) Lai Cheuk-ho said the study comprises preliminary technical and impact assessments, ground investigation, preparation of an outline design for the engineering works, and formulation of implementation strategies.
The suitability of Nui Po Shan as the cavern site will be reviewed, along with an initial plan of the future land use of the existing Sha Tin site. Mr Lai said the move will release about 28 hectares of land.
"We will make reference to the successful experiences of the Stanley Sewage Treatment Works, Hong Kong's first works built in caverns, as well as cavern works in Nordic countries."
The Government is exploring advanced sewage treatment technologies to reduce the required cavern space and shorten the construction period. The caverns will serve as natural barriers and, together with odour control measures and ventilation shafts in remote locations, will resolve the odour issue.
The department will launch the stage one public engagement soon, to work with the public on refining the relocation proposal.
A contract worth about HK$57.9 million was awarded to AECOM Asia to conduct the feasibility study which will be completed by May 2014. The relocation process will finish in 2027.
