Architects and designers Benoy announced that the firm¡¯s Hong Cheng Plaza, Guangzhou has been named ¡®Best Chinese Futura Project¡¯ at this year¡¯s MIPIM Asia Awards.
Set in Guangzhou¡¯s central axis at the heart of the city¡¯s new CBD, the project will be China¡¯s first ¡®urban park¡¯ retail concept. Inspired by the major central parks around the world and the symbolism of the Chinese Carp fish, Benoy will deliver a ground-breaking tranquil urban oasis in the heart of thriving southern China.
In collaboration with Sun Hung Kai Properties, the three-storey 110,000 sq m Hong Cheng Plaza aims to set new international standards for sustainability in the retail sector. The design blends highly sustainable technology with a new pedestrian and public transport interchange, enhancing the capacity of the entire city and the CBD¡¯s aesthetic.
Set to open in 2014, Hong Cheng Plaza is deliberately low rise, being some 24 metres in height, which is in striking contrast to the surrounding high-rise urban realm. As a result, Hong Cheng Plaza will have an eye-catching visual presence, creating drama and rhythm, and evoking memories of rural parkland along this now burgeoning commercial central axis and the Guangzhou skyline.
