The advantage of Bolt & Spade Joint vs Joint Pack
- MM Powerplus Busway

In the electrical busway market, there are two kinds of jointing methods: the Bolt & Spade Joint and the Multi-Stack Joint Pack system. The Bolt & Spade jointing method is better than the Multi-Stack Joint Pack due to its one contact per phase. For the Multi-Stack Joint Pack, there are 4 contact points per phase in low current rating. Therefore, there will be 16 contact points for a 3P4W busway. As the number of conductor contact points increases, this will result in higher voltage drop and temperature rise. For middle range rating busway where the busway becomes double stack per phase, the number of contact points increases dramatically to 32 and triple to 48 for higher rating where the busway is a triple stack.

Furthermore, the conductor contact of the Bolt & Spade Joint is a direct over-lap while the Multi-Stack Joint Pack uses a link bar. The link bar may not provide a good contact for two reasons: (1) the link bar may not be the same material in terms of conductivity as the busway conductor; (2) the contact area may be smaller, creating chances for over-heating.
