Sika drives the green life with innovative, environmentally friendly construction and industry materials
A subsidiary of Sika AG, a leading global supplier of construction and industry materials and technology listed in Switzerland, Sika Hongkong Ltd has been promoting green living for the past 50 years in the Greater China region with its unique range of innovative, environmentally friendly construction and industry materials.
The acceleration of global warming and rapid deterioration of the world environment in recent years have prompted the Sika group to further increase its already substantial investments in the research, development and application of environmentally friendly products and technologies. According to Mr Jan Jenisch, Sika's Asia Pacific President, Sika sees the challenges of improving environmental conditions as market opportunities, and ecological issues have been the driving force behind 50% of Sika's research and development projects. In 2007 alone, Sika invested over HKD 50 million in safety and environmental protection, an increase of 36% over the previous year.
Among the numerous state-of-the-art innovations of Sika are: SikaBond an environmentally friendly adhesive system for the installation of wooden flooring which significantly reduces the amount of wood used while improving durability of the floors; the Green Roof System, already used in Hong Kong EcoPark, which helps to lower the Urban Heat Island Effect by retaining up to 75% of rainwater, reducing cooling and heating costs of buildings through thermal insulation, and generally helping to lower the overall temperature of a city; and SikaViscoCrete a superior water-reducing admixture which helps to lower energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in pre-cast concrete factories, and which has been used in major projects such as the Mori Building in Shanghai, the massive Su-Tong Bridge in Jiangsu Province, and the Venetian and New Lisboa in Macau.
Sika actively participates in the international Responsible Care program initiated by the chemical industry. Currently 47 companies worldwide, representing 90% of group sales, operate in conformity with the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. In 2007, Sika's products have managed to improve energy efficiency by an impressive 13%, reduce carbon dioxide output by a significant 18%, lower dust emission by 20%, and decrease waste water by 3%, as compared to the previous year.
